Jose Luis Talavera

Born in Cuba/Lives and Works in Florida

Copper & Bronze

José L. Talavera (b. 1962, Havana, Cuba) is a Cape Coral-based sculptor whose work navigates the profound intersection between the natural world and the human experience. With a career spanning over three decades, Talavera’s practice is rooted in the concept of transformation, expertly balancing raw texture with refined form to evoke deep emotional resonance.

Mastering a diverse palette of materials—including copper, bronze, marble, quartz, and wood—his sculptures invite a tactile and visual dialogue. From his early roots in the Asociación Hermanos Saíz in Cuba to his recent presence at Art Basel Miami (2024-2025) and Campins Fine Art Gallery, Talavera has established himself as a sophisticated voice in contemporary sculpture, consistently exploring the beauty of organic evolution.

Artist Statement

My sculpture is defined by a raw connection to my materials. I work mainly with copper, pushing its physical limits while embracing the beauty of wear and transformation. Rather than following a specific style, my pieces are born from a constant, careful observation of the world around me.

My process is one of continuous experimentation and adjustment, creating space for the viewer to find their own meaning. To me, sculpture represents the intersection of matter and time, and I find great joy in seeing how people connect with the final result.
